What Yelp's own API leaves out
Yelp's official route is the Yelp Places API, and since 2024 it is paid only. The cheapest plan, Base at 229 USD a month, returns no reviews and no photos at all. Enhanced at 299 USD returns three review excerpts of roughly 160 characters per business, picked by Yelp. Premium at 643 USD raises that to seven. No plan returns the full text of a review.
Three more rules decide whether the API fits a commercial project. Yelp's developer FAQ says data from the API may be cached for 24 hours at most, with only the business ID kept longer. It says analysis is not permitted for Places API integrations. And a paid plan carries a daily limit of 5,000 calls, so a 30 day month tops out near 150,000 calls, which is exactly the line where Yelp asks you to talk to sales.
That rules out most of what buyers actually want Yelp for: a review history, a sentiment dashboard, a lead list with phone and website kept in a CRM, or a monthly view of how ratings move across a market. Each of those needs full text or stored records. So the teams that sell reputation management, local lead generation and market research read the public Yelp pages the way a customer does, through a Yelp web scraper, and keep their own data.
Yelp API vs Yelp scraper API compared
Yelp plan contents from the Yelp Places API plan page and developer FAQ, checked October 6, 2026. Prices as listed on Yelp's pricing page.
| Option | Per month | Reviews you get | Business fields | Storage and use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Places API Base | 229 USD, 30,000 calls | None | 15 attributes, no website URL, no photos | 24 hour cache, no analysis |
| Places API Enhanced | 299 USD, 30,000 calls | 3 excerpts of about 160 characters | 23 attributes incl. website, price, 3 photos | 24 hour cache, no analysis |
| Places API Premium | 643 USD, 30,000 calls | Up to 7 excerpts plus Review Highlights | 66 attributes, up to 12 photos | 24 hour cache, no analysis |
| WebScrap | 49 USD, 50,000 pages | Full text of every recommended review, about 10 per page | Whatever the public page shows, named by you | Your own records, under your own legal review |
Where Yelp's API is the better choice: if you display Yelp content inside a consumer app, with Yelp's logo and attribution, the licensed route is the clean one, and Premium's 66 attributes arrive already parsed. If you need data to analyze, store or sell as insight, the API terms work against you. The plan by plan arithmetic, including overage, is in our Yelp API pricing breakdown.
What Yelp data jobs cost per month
One business page is one request. One review page holds about 10 reviews. Yelp column priced on the cheapest plan that returns the needed fields, at its listed overage rate. Monthly billing.
| Job | Requests per month | WebScrap plan | Yelp Places API |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lead list of 20,000 contractors with phone and website | about 22,000, once | 49 USD, Starter | 299 USD Enhanced, and the list may only be cached 24 hours |
| 500 client locations checked daily for new reviews | 15,000 | 49 USD, Starter | 299 USD for 3 excerpts per location, no guarantee the newest is among them |
| Backfill 1,000 businesses with 200 reviews each | about 20,000 | 49 USD, Starter | Not possible, no full review text on any plan |
| 5,000 locations checked daily | 150,000 | 149 USD, Growth | about 1,087 USD on Enhanced, at the 5,000 a day ceiling |
| 30,000 locations checked daily | 900,000 | 499 USD, Scale | Above 150,000 calls, sales quote only |
Enhanced at 150,000 calls is 299 USD plus 120,000 extra calls at 6.57 USD per 1,000, or 1,087.40 USD. Our side assumes every page loads on the first try; a blocked or empty page is retried through a fresh address and only the successful fetch counts against your plan.
How to scrape Yelp business data and reviews in four steps
01
Build the search list
Start from Yelp search URLs, one per category and neighborhood or ZIP code, for example plumbers in each Austin ZIP. Small queries keep every result reachable.
02
Collect the businesses
Ask the search pages for name, rating, review count, category and business URL. Remove duplicates on the URL, since one business often appears under two categories.
03
Open each business
Request the business page and name the fields: address, phone, website, hours, price range, and the reviews with rating, date, text and owner reply, sorted by newest.
04
Schedule the refresh
Growth and Scale save the request as a job that runs every morning and posts new reviews to your webhook, so a 1 star review reaches the account manager the same day.
The request itself is a POST to /v1/scrape with the Yelp URL, rendering on, and a plain English list of fields, as shown on the API docs page. The same key reads Google, so most reputation teams pair this with the Google Reviews API and see both platforms in one table.
Who buys a Yelp scraper and what they run on it
Reputation agencies
Audit a prospect's full Yelp history before the pitch, then watch every client location daily for new low ratings and unanswered reviews.
Local lead generation
Sales teams selling to restaurants, salons, contractors or clinics build lists by city and category with phone, website, rating and review count, and keep them in the CRM.
Restaurant and franchise groups
Compare each unit with the competitors on the same block: rating trend, review velocity and what customers complain about, by location.
Market research and site selection
Count businesses, price levels and ratings by ZIP code to size a market or score a new site, refreshed monthly instead of bought as a stale list.
Four mistakes that break a Yelp scraper
Reading a 403 as no data. Yelp's edge refuses requests that do not look like a browser on a residential network. On October 6, 2026 a plain HTTP client got HTTP 403 with an empty body, no challenge page, nothing to parse. A homegrown script logs that as a business with no reviews. A managed API treats it as a failed fetch, retries through another address from the proxy pool and does not bill it.
Expecting the review count to match. Yelp shows recommended reviews on the business page and moves the rest to a separate not currently recommended list. The headline count and the number you collect will differ. Decide up front whether your product needs both lists, and store which list each review came from.
One giant search per city. Yelp's API stops at 240 businesses per query, and broad searches on the site get thin and repetitive long before a metro is covered. Split by category and ZIP code, then deduplicate on the business URL.
Polling every page every day. Most businesses get a new Yelp review every few weeks, not every day. Check page one sorted by newest daily and backfill deeper pages only when the newest date changes. It cuts the request count, and the bill, by an order of magnitude.
Yelp scraper API questions
Does Yelp have an API?
Yes, the Yelp Places API, formerly Yelp Fusion. It is paid only since 2024, from 229 USD a month for 30,000 calls, with a 30 day trial of 5,000 calls for evaluation. It returns business data and, on the 299 USD plan and up, three review excerpts of about 160 characters per business.
Can you scrape Yelp reviews?
Yes. The public business page shows the full text of the recommended reviews, about 10 per page, and a scraping API reads them the way a browser does, page by page. That is the only way to get full review text, because Yelp's own API returns excerpts only.
How do I get all reviews from Yelp?
Request the business page sorted by newest and step through the review pages until the dates pass your cutoff. The API cannot do this: it returns 3 excerpts on Enhanced and up to 7 on Premium, chosen by Yelp, and never the full list. Reviews Yelp marks as not currently recommended sit on a separate page.
How much does the Yelp API cost?
Base is 229 USD a month, Enhanced 299 USD and Premium 643 USD, each with 30,000 calls included. Extra calls are 5.91, 6.57 or 14.13 USD per 1,000. Above 150,000 calls a month Yelp sends you to its sales team. Full figures are in our Yelp API pricing breakdown.
Is the Yelp API free?
Not any more. Yelp ended free access in 2024. A 30 day trial gives you 5,000 calls, and Yelp states those calls are strictly for evaluation and not for commercial deployment. Anything you ship needs a paid plan.
What data can you scrape from Yelp?
From search pages, business name, rating, review count, category, neighborhood and the business URL. From a business page, address, phone, website, hours, price range, amenities, photos count and the full text of each review with rating, date and owner reply. You name the fields and get typed JSON.
Is it legal to scrape Yelp?
Reading public pages is generally not hacking under US law after the hiQ v. LinkedIn rulings, but Yelp's terms forbid automated access, so contract claims are possible. Keep to public pages, collect only the fields you need, do not republish reviews as your own content and ask your counsel before you build a product on the data.
Why does my Yelp scraper get a 403?
Yelp's edge blocks requests that do not look like a real browser from a residential network. We measured a plain HTTP client on October 6, 2026: HTTP 403 with an empty body, before any page loads. Rotating residential addresses with full browser rendering gets the page; a blocked page is never billed on WebScrap.
How many Yelp businesses can I pull per search?
Yelp's API stops at 240 businesses per search query and 50 per request. To cover a whole metro, split it by category and by neighborhood or ZIP code so each query stays small, then remove duplicates on the Yelp business ID or URL.
Can I store Yelp data from the API?
Only for 24 hours. Yelp's API rules cap caching at 24 hours, except the business ID, which you may keep. Yelp also states that analysis is not permitted on Places API data. Teams that need history or analytics collect the public pages and keep their own records.
