Why buyers skip the Tripadvisor Content API
Tripadvisor's official route is the Content API. It returns a location's details, up to 5 photos and up to 5 of the most recent reviews. The first 5,000 calls a month are free, the rest are billed against a daily budget you set, at a rate Tripadvisor shows only during signup.
The price is rarely the problem. The license is. Tripadvisor's caching policy lets you keep the location ID forever and nothing else: no rating, no review text, no review count may be cached, stored or indexed. The Master Terms add that every page showing the content must be hidden from search engines, that you may not change the sort order or pick which reviews to show, and that you may not display the content alongside reviews from any other platform.
Read those rules against what hotel groups, restaurant chains and reputation agencies actually buy Tripadvisor data for: a rating trend by property, a complaint analysis across 300 locations, a dashboard with Google and Tripadvisor side by side, a competitive set report for a revenue meeting. Every one of them needs stored history or mixed platforms. So those teams read the public pages with a Tripadvisor scraper and keep their own records.

Tripadvisor API vs Tripadvisor scraper options compared
Official API terms from the Tripadvisor Content API documentation. Marketplace and scraper prices from each vendor's public page, checked October 7, 2026.
| Option | Price | Reviews you get | Storage and use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tripadvisor Content API | 5,000 calls a month free, then a sliding rate shown at signup | Up to 5 most recent per location | Location ID only, pages must be non indexable |
| Apify Tripadvisor Reviews Scraper | From 0.90 USD per 1,000 reviews, pay per event | Full text, per run | Yours, under your own legal review |
| Bright Data Tripadvisor scraper | 1.50 USD per 1,000 page loads, or 499 USD for 383,000 | Full text | Yours, under your own legal review |
| WebScrap | 49 USD for 50,000 pages, 0.33 USD per 1,000 on Scale | Full text, about 10 per review page | Yours, under your own legal review |
Where the official API wins: a travel app that shows a hotel's Tripadvisor bubble rating and latest reviews to its users, with Tripadvisor's logo, is exactly what the Content API is licensed for, and the first 5,000 calls cost nothing. Where a marketplace scraper wins: a single pull of a few thousand reviews, where paying per review beats a monthly plan. For daily monitoring across hundreds of properties, a flat plan with your own history is the cheaper and more flexible buy. The full arithmetic is in our Tripadvisor API pricing breakdown.
What Tripadvisor data jobs cost per month
One location page or one review page is one request. A hotel review page holds about 10 reviews. Daily checks read page one sorted by newest and go deeper only when something new appears. Monthly billing.
| Job | Requests per month | WebScrap plan | Content API |
|---|---|---|---|
| 300 hotels in a portfolio checked daily for new reviews | about 9,000 | 49 USD, Starter | Fits the paid tier, but no stored history and 5 reviews a look |
| Backfill 2,000 restaurants with 300 reviews each | about 60,000, once | 149 USD, Growth, for that month | Not possible, only the 5 newest reviews exist in the API |
| Competitive set of 5,000 hotels, daily rating and newest reviews | about 150,000 | 149 USD, Growth | Ratings may not be stored, so no trend line |
| 25,000 locations for a reputation platform, daily | about 750,000 | 499 USD, Scale | Above 500,000 calls, sales quote only |
Our figures assume each page loads on the first try. A page that comes back as a DataDome block is retried through a fresh residential address and only the successful fetch counts against your plan.
How to scrape Tripadvisor reviews in four steps
01
List the locations
Start from your own properties, or from Tripadvisor's city lists for hotels, restaurants or things to do. Ask the list pages for name, rating, review count, city ranking and URL.
02
Pick the language
A busy New York or Orlando hotel collects reviews in a dozen languages. Request the English filter for US reporting, or one pass per language when an international team reads the comments.
03
Read the review pages
Name the fields: title, text, rating, date of stay, trip type and owner response. Step through the -or10-, -or20- offsets until the dates pass your cutoff.
04
Schedule the refresh
Growth and Scale save the request as a job that runs every morning and posts new reviews to your webhook, so a 2 bubble review reaches the general manager before checkout.
The request is a POST to /v1/scrape with the Tripadvisor URL, rendering on, and a plain English list of fields, as the API docs show. The same key reads Google and Yelp, which is how agencies build one reputation table across platforms with the Google Reviews API and the Yelp scraper API.
Who buys a Tripadvisor scraper and what they run on it
Hotels
Hotel groups and management companies
Track every property's rating, review velocity and response rate against its competitive set, and feed the complaint themes into the weekly revenue and operations meeting.
Restaurants
Restaurant groups and franchisors
Compare units in the same city on rating trend and what diners mention, from slow service to a dish that keeps coming back cold, and catch a falling location early.
Agencies
Hospitality reputation agencies
Audit a prospect's full Tripadvisor history before the pitch, then monitor clients daily for unanswered reviews and report Tripadvisor next to Google and Yelp in one dashboard.
Travel tech
Tour operators, travel startups and analysts
Rank attractions and tours by rating and review count per destination, watch how a market's top 30 changes each season, or score acquisition targets for a hospitality fund.
Four mistakes that break a Tripadvisor scraper
Measured on October 7, 2026 with a plain HTTP client.
Reading a block as an empty page. Tripadvisor runs DataDome. A request that does not look like a real browser on a residential network gets a 403 with a 775 byte page asking to enable JavaScript. A homegrown script parses that as a hotel with no reviews and writes zeros into your dashboard. A managed API treats it as a failed fetch, retries through another address and does not bill it. Our DataDome bypass API page explains the mechanics.
Mixing languages and machine translations. The default view of a popular property blends languages, and some reviews appear with an automatic translation. Pick the language filter on purpose and store the original language with each review, or your sentiment numbers will drift.
Matching the wrong property. Chains have several similar names in one city, and properties get renamed after a flag change. Key every record on the Tripadvisor location ID in the URL, the same d number the official API uses, never on the name.
Building on the API and adding Google later. Teams prototype on the free 5,000 calls, then the product needs Google and Yelp in the same view. Section 3.5.1 of the Content API terms forbids exactly that, and the stored history the dashboard needs was never allowed either. Decide on the data source before the first sprint, not after the first customer.
Tripadvisor scraper API questions
Does Tripadvisor have an API?
Yes, the Tripadvisor Content API. It returns location details, up to 5 photos and up to 5 of the most recent reviews per location. The first 5,000 calls a month are free, a credit card is required, and usage above that is billed at a sliding rate Tripadvisor shows at checkout rather than on a public page.
Can you scrape Tripadvisor reviews?
Yes. The public hotel, restaurant and attraction pages show the full text of each review with rating, date, trip type and owner response, and a scraping API reads them page by page the way a browser does. It is the only route to the full review history, because the Content API stops at the 5 most recent.
How do I get all reviews from Tripadvisor?
Request the location's review page, then step through the review pages, which Tripadvisor addresses with offsets such as -or10- and -or20- in the URL, until the review dates pass your cutoff. Filter by language first, because a popular hotel carries reviews in many languages and the default view mixes them.
How much does the Tripadvisor API cost?
The first 5,000 Content API calls each month are free. After that Tripadvisor charges pay as you go against a daily budget you set, at a sliding volume rate shown during signup, and sends anyone above 500,000 calls a month to sales. Our Tripadvisor API pricing article works through what that buys.
Can I store data from the Tripadvisor API?
No. Tripadvisor's caching policy allows unlimited caching of the location ID only. Every other attribute, including ratings and review text, may not be cached, stored or indexed. That rules out review history, trend reports and any database built from the API.
Can I show Tripadvisor reviews next to Google reviews?
Not through the Content API. Section 3.5.1 of the Content API Master Terms forbids displaying or using Tripadvisor content alongside other user generated content and forbids licensing similar content from another provider during the agreement. Multi platform review dashboards are built on public page data instead.
What data can you scrape from Tripadvisor?
From search and list pages, the name, rating, review count, ranking in the city, price level and URL of each hotel, restaurant or attraction. From a location page, the address, phone, website, amenities or cuisines, the rating breakdown, and each review with title, text, rating, date of stay, trip type and owner response.
Why does my Tripadvisor scraper get a 403?
Tripadvisor sits behind DataDome. We sent a plain HTTP request to a New York hotel page on October 7, 2026 and got HTTP 403, a server header reading DataDome and a 775 byte page asking to enable JavaScript. Rotating residential addresses with real browser rendering gets the page, and a blocked fetch is never billed on WebScrap.
Is it legal to scrape Tripadvisor?
Reading public pages is generally not unauthorized access under US law after the hiQ v. LinkedIn rulings, but Tripadvisor's site terms forbid automated collection, so contract claims are possible. Collect only public fields you need, do not republish reviews as your own content, keep personal data out of your records and have counsel review the use.
What is the best Tripadvisor scraper for a business?
For a one time pull of a few thousand reviews, a pay per result marketplace scraper is fine. For daily monitoring of hundreds of properties, a scraping API on a flat monthly plan is cheaper and lets you keep your own history: 49 USD buys 50,000 pages, about 500,000 reviews at 10 per page.
Get every Tripadvisor review for every property you track
Send a Tripadvisor URL and the fields you want, get listings and full review text as JSON. 49 USD for 50,000 pages on Starter, blocked pages never billed.
